Brent Steven Teller, 37, of Decatur, was called home on December 3, 2023, to stand guard at the gates of heaven as his final call to duty, after an earthly journey full of valor, sacrifice, love, loyalty, and dedication to this great nation.
Brent was born on January 3, 1986, in Fort Lewis, Washington, and grew up in Newport News, VA, where it was evident to those around him that his heart beat to the rhythm of duty and honor. Following in the footsteps of his dad, he enlisted in the United States Army in July of 2004. With steadfast courage, Brent felt the resounding call to defend his beloved nation, standing tall in the line of duty. In his eyes, his service was not just a duty but a legacy he proudly carried forward, echoing the bravery of his father, uncles, and grandfathers who had gone before him into battle.
Brent served valiantly until 2016, when he retired from the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant. During his tenure, Brent demonstrated unparalleled bravery and resilience throughout his four tours in Iraq. His return bore witness to a decorated combat veteran adorned with two Purple Hearts, tangible tokens of his commitment and sacrifice to our country, for which he selflessly served. His military service awards include the Iraq Campaign Medal with 5 Campaign Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Valorous Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Yet despite being a decorated combat veteran and demonstrating valor on the battlefield, Brent's most cherished title was that of Dad. Makenzie, his beloved daughter, held the pinnacle of his heart, a love that illuminated his life and purpose.
Brent earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2015, and was working as an HVAC technician with CEC Facilities Group. Brent was also a Divemaster whose passion for underwater adventures was sparked after scuba diving with his dad at Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Brent often enjoyed fishing with Makenzie, his sisters and brothers, and his dad on his boat. He was a master of grilling an exceptionally prepared steak, especially on special occasions. Most recently, Brent had introduced Makenzie to deer hunting where she successfully shot her first deer on their first of what was to be many father-daughter hunting trips.
Brent leaves behind a legacy of courage and love, survived by his cherished daughter, Makenzie Teller (TX); devoted parents, John and Christa Teller (Rhome, TX), Stacy Kahler and Walt Saunders (Newport News, VA); beloved siblings, Dustin Teller (FL), Cadyn, Kiel, Ashlyn, Alyvia, and Jase (TX); as well as an adored niece, Azalea (FL). In addition, his memory lives on in the hearts of his close friends - Jessica Teller and Ralph Coll, bonus family members, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a network of individuals touched by his courage, compassion, and kindness.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Jane Teller (CA), Richard and Toby Teller (NJ), John Poole (WA), and his brothers, who stood bravely by his side in the trials of battle.
Brent's life was a testament to bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering love—a beacon of inspiration for future generations. His spirit shall endure, a guiding light in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He is already so deeply missed, but we know that his soul is now free and he will stand guard at the gates of heaven ready to greet us on day.
Services will be held at 12 pm on Monday, December 18th, 2023, at JE Foust Funeral Home in Grapevine, TX, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at 2:15 pm at the Dallas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with funeral expenses to be placed in trust for Makenzie are being accepted. The family has set up a Venmo @Love4Brent (#4479).
