Mary Elaine White 89, of Grants Pass, died Sunday July 24, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center, Roseburg, surrounded by family. Born June 9, 1927 at Josephine General Hospital, in Grants Pass, she was the daughter of William & Delilah Willson. Mary was the youngest of 7 children and the only girl. All brothers have previously passed. Mary’s father taught her to drive at 15, and her independence blossomed. Mary attended Murphy Elementary and Grants Pass HS. Married to John S White April 10, 1946 in Provolt, OR. In the same house Mary & John raised their 5 children. Family was an important part of Mary’s life! The more family Mary could fit into her house for Holiday dinner the better! Thank goodness for the covered patio to extend the living space! Mary spent the majority of her working years in school food service. Retiring as the Food Service Director from Grants Pass School District. Throughout Mary’s working career she was active in the Oregon School Food Services Association, where she served as president. While active in the association Mary (and usually John) traveled from Alaska to Indiana to Louisiana & Washington DC. Camping in their travel trailer was also enjoyed by both Mary & John; whether it was overnight alone at the beach or with church friends at Indian Mary Park or several weeks on the road ending in Wyoming. Mary was a member of 1st Baptist Church,, later becoming River Valley Community Church. She studied in 1-2 bible studies weekly, God has been a big influence on Mary’s life! Mary has been a member of Christian Women’s Club, Zonta, and Heart & Hand. She was a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels and served on the board for Rogue Valley Council of Government. Crocheting hand towels and sewing were among Mary’s favorite crafts. She enjoyed sewing quilts for family members, and bringing stuffed animals to life for grandchildren. For many years playing cards brought great enjoyment to both Mary & John. Sometimes playing twice a week with 8+ friends, always involving food - usually dessert. Mary is survived by her 5 children and their spouses: Jerry & Dorothy White, Sandie & Russ Davis, Darla & Rick Thompson, Nancy White, Jim & Nancy White. Mary had 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. The Celebration of Life service is Friday, August 12, 2016 at 10:00am, at Chapel of the Valley LB Hall Funeral Home. A catered meal will follow the service.
