Sally Irene Story, age 94, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Ivah and Luther Story and brother, Martin Story. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Story; nephews and niece Tom (Kathy) Story, David (Mahdokht) Story, and Anne (Tom) Coyne; and her “special daughters” Carie Otter, Rachel Sleda, and Pandora Dubose.
After graduating from Grandville High School (’47), Sally obtained her master's in music/education at MSU. She taught music in Mason, Godwin, and Sparta. Her love of travel and adventure took her to Japan to teach US military service children. Sally's unwavering faith lead her life, always looking to serve God in any way she could. She became a US-2 missionary for the United Methodist Church in Albuquerque and Erie, PA. After that, she worked for social services in Grand Rapids before moving to Washington DC as Social Concerns Director/Youth Ministry at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, mentoring hundreds of kids, taking the them on amazing after-school adventures, and coaching a boys high school basketball team. Finally, she obtained her master's in social work from WMU and worked for Bethany Services in Paw Paw.
She returned to Grandville after retiring but never slowed down. She was a lifelong member of the Grandville United Methodist Church and ever faithful soprano and hand bell choir member.
Sally loved all things music. She especially cherished dancing with the Senior Steppers: “We are family.” “Life is a performance - in the front row.”
The other love of Sally’s life was sweets; all things chocolate, mocha, and/or ice cream fit the bill. Tippy Cow was a favorite.
The family wishes to thank all those who provided her care with such kindness, especially Carie and Rachel; they are truly angels on earth. We could never have done it without you!
Visitation will be held 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Grandville United Methodist Church (3140 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville, MI), followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. and a luncheon (with chocolate) to follow.
In honor of Sally, please perform a random act of kindness and have an ice cream sundae (chocolate/mocha-mocha/Vernors) while remembering a life well lived. Memorial donations may be made to Grandville United Methodist Church. The family welcomes memories and messages in their online guestbook at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
