Howard Johnston, age 95, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 28, 2020. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Ziegler; siblings June Keenan, Loretta Meyer, Gordon Johnston, Harold Johnston. He is survived by wife of 69 years, Gertrude Johnston; children Vikki Johnston, Patti Johnston, Michele (Ed) Bussler, extra daughter, Christina Lopez Herrera (Abraham Herrera); son-in-law, Dave Ziegler; grandchildren Bethany Ziegler, David (Melanie) Ziegler, Matthew Ziegler, Riley (Lexie) Bussler, Lea Bussler; great-grandchildren Austin Heistand, Shane, Elliott, Lauren, and Cameron Ziegler; siblings Gerald (Carol) Johnston, Patricia Gabbert, Lola Blaszczyk; brother-in-law, John Stuyfzand; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Howard proudly served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army during WWII, where he led his platoon in a very significant battle that helped win the war. He was combat wounded and awarded a Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of DAV. The guy is a war hero!
He worked for the Grand Rapids Press for 31 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, manicuring the yard, golfing, and deer hunting.
Visitation will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2020 at Fair Haven Church, 2900 Baldwin St., Hudsonville, MI 49426. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Fair Haven Church, with visitation from 10 - 10:45 a.m. prior to service.
