Sadly, George “Sonny'' Cook Jr. passed away at the age of 94 on Saturday, November 4, 2023. George was born on April 17, 1929 in Muskegon, MI to George C. Cook Sr. and Delores Roach. In the early 1950s, George served in the Air Force in Puerto Rico. On September 11, 1953, he married Barbara Fritts. They raised one daughter, Kathie Wilczek, together and enjoyed their time with their grandchildren. Upon Barb's passing, George met his partner Rose Yoder, and they spent 21 happy years together.
George had a passion for life. He was incredibly gregarious and would light up the room with his fun personality. Family, friends, and strangers alike were charmed by him. George enjoyed spending his free time cheering on his beloved Detroit Red Wings, hunting, visiting casinos, grabbing coffee with friends, and spending time at his favorite haunts with Rose where they almost always split a meal. Kathie has fond memories where George was ever-present in bringing a spark of joy and magic to her childhood. This propensity for fun carried over to his grandchildren who remember visits filled with laughter and mischief.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; and four siblings. He is survived by his partner, Rose Yoder, and her family; daughter, Kathie Wilczek (Gerald); grandchildren Jonathan Wilczek (Allison) and Kalen Montesione (Christopher); and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Rose’s children Kevin Yoder, Rob Yoder, Jennifer Yoder; six bonus grandchildren; as well as siblings Phoebe Palitti and Tony Smith.
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring of 2024. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
