Elmer was born to Ralph and Dora Miedema on the family farm. Later he partnered with his father, sons and grandsons establishing E. Miedema and Sons Inc. His passions were serving Byron Center First Christian Reformed Church, the local Byron Center Christian School and South Christian High School. Elmer was married to Hilda for 64 years and faithfully cared for her during her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. There were many happy years of farming, camping, wintering in Florida and traveling the U.S. and abroad with family and friends. He later married Leona Nyenhuis with whom he spent three wonderful years.
Elmer was also preceded in death by his son Ken, daughter-in-law Sally, sister Faith, and sister-in-law Garietta.
Survivors are son Dave Miedema, his sons Jeremy (Mel), Tim (Katie) and Joel (Sherri); daughter-in-law Sharon Miedema (Ron) Dykhouse and her children Sheila (Ben), Ryan (Suzi), Jeff (Katie); daughter Sandy (Dave) Wiest and children Eric (Cally), Brian (Lacy), Andrea (fiancé Luke) and daughter Lori (Mike) Ezinga and children Kurt (Katie), Brandon (Elise) and Tyler (fiancée Caitlin) and 21 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Byron Manor for their kindness and compassion while Elmer was in their care.
Visitation will be held from 1 - 3 and 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Cook Funeral Home. 2067 84th Street SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Byron Center First Christian Reformed Church, 8541 Byron Center Ave., S.W., Byron Center, MI with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery.
