Doug was born on October 12, 1946 to Lloyd and Jean Brower. Doug was a graduate of Hudsonville High School and Ferris State College with a degree in teacher education. He was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970 with the First Cavalry Division where he attained the rank of SP5 and was awarded an Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star Medal. After Vietnam, he worked in the automotive industry at Donnelly Corporation as a mechanical engineer.
Doug loved his family, travel, history, going to sprint car races and the Indianapolis 500, as well as coaching youth sports and attending his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting and musical events.
Doug is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 57 years, Janice; children Ryan (Deanne) Brower, Kelly Tompkins; and grandchildren Mackenzie, Hailey, and Sylvia Brower, J.R., Ainsley, Autumn, Peter and Jase Tompkins, Amanda, Trevor and Kyle Pisoni. He is also survived by brothers- and sisters-in-law Karalee Doornbos, Karen Doornbos, Bryan Doornbos, Tammy Doornbos, Marlene Cooper, Dan Doornbos, Carolyn De Jong, and Kimberly Steigenga, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Jean Brower; brothers Larry and Rex; and brothers-in-law Gary Doornbos, Bruce Doornbos, Ron Doornbos, and Steve Steigenga.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024 at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to service. A dessert reception will follow. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Doug, contributions may be made to Faith Hospice of Grand Rapids.
