Richard LeRoy Harter Sr, 82, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 10, 2022, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born Nov 22, 1939, in Kansas City Missouri, a Son of Kenneth L. and Emma Juanita Harter. Richard grew up in Kansas City and graduated from William Chrisman HS. Richard was part of the ROTC at William Chrisman High School and received citations for his ability to handle a rifle.
Richard served his country with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963 spending time on Eniwetok Island. While on the island he learned how to play the guitar.
After coming home, he showed his brothers the guitar and wound up managing a band with his brothers as the musicians. He enjoyed playing the guitar, collecting music and creating colorful artwork. He worked many years in the financial/collection industry. Richard always believed in helping his neighbors wherever he lived.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. He is survived by his brother Jerry Harter and 4 children: Rick Harter Jr, Suzy (John) Novotny, Carol (Terry) Magelssen, and Stephen (Drinelle) Harter. Fourteen Grandchildren and many Great Grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022, Visitation at 6:00 p.m. Memorial at 7:00 p.m. at McGilley & George Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 12913 Grandview Road, Grandview, MO 64030. A Graveside service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Enter through Gate 5, Mound Grove Cemetery, 1818 N River Blvd, Independence, MO 64050.
