It was just about this time a year ago today that I had my last conversation with my brother Curtis. We talked on the phone and the last thing he said to me was "I love you Tammy". I said â€œI love you too Curtis". When we hung up I thought about how sincere he said that and I was sure he really meant it. I miss him but I know I will see him again. I thought a lot about Curtis today. On the way home from work the James Taylor song we played at his funeral came on the radio (very ironic). I cried on the way home and thought about how much I miss and love him.

I just found out today. 3/24/2011 at the visitation of another one of our classmates.  Curtis and I were really good friends that just got out of touch with each other.  The last time I saw him was July 20. 2010 at our friend Cheryl Terhunes funeral.  We've lost 3 in our graduating class since then now.  I wish someone would have let me know before today, I would have been there.  I was in choir with him at the church and would not have missed the experience for the world.  God bless you Curtis, I will miss you for the rest of my life.  Love you forever.  Phyllis Keller

I'm sad to say, I have been out of touch with the family for a few years now.  I am one of Curtis's cousins. My daughter and I have been having strange dreams for over a week now and didn't understand what they meant and why "Missouri" and other things were so much a part of them, especially since I live in Texas.  I was looking online and stumbled on the tragic news about Curtis just today.  I am still in shock and disbelief.  I last saw Curtis at my mother's funeral (his Aunt Margaret) in 2000. I can not imagine what the family has gone through.  I want them all to know that I do love them and care about them and keep them in my prayers.  For those who doesn't know, think of Curtis on December 5th, his birthday.  I am so sorry to my Aunt Wanda and all my cousins that I haven't been around you more in the last few years and that I was not there for you during this difficult time. I love you all.

I married into a wonderful family full of wonderful people who are full of love, which brought me in contact with Curtis. Though I did not have the opportunity to talk to him much, the times we did talk, I will cherish in my heart forever. I DEEPLY admired his smarts & the love he and Rita shared. You could just tell by looking at them how in love they were. 

I received the email shortly after noon, after getting my husband, Josh, off to work. I sat down to read my emails when I came across the email from Wanda. My heart sank immediately during the process of reading the email & there were immediate tears. I called my husband right away and tried to stay calm enough to inform him. 

To this day, my heart still sinks when the thought comes to mind of this loving soul being taken from us. For he was SOOOOO loved by SOOOO many. It was a GREAT honor and a true blessing to have been able to have met Curtis, let alone, be in the same family. 

You are and always will be loved and missed, Curtis. Thank you for the difference you have made in the lives of SO many.

Uncle Curtis had always been a good man in my opinion. He was a loving father and very productive citizen. My fondest memories of him always involve laughter. The thing I most appreciated in him was his sense of humor. He, like me, enjoyed a somewhat old-fashioned type of comedy that was apparent in his personality and demeanor. Luckily, he never lost that sense of humor and died with it. This truly is a commendable accomplishment in life. His laughter will never die, and neither will the memories of this great man.

My dad was the best father I could of ever asked for. I loved him so much, I always called him, because I would always worry about him. He was a great father, but he also became a great friend to me when I got older. I wish he could of been here to see his grand daughter be born. Nothing could ever stop me from loving my dad even though he is gone. I will think about him everyday, and love him as if he was here. My dad was so proud of Chris and I. Everyone told us how he bragged about his children. I believe that because dad really showed his love to us by always being there. I love you daddy, I will always be your little girl!!

Remembering Curtis:

Curtis will never be forgotten in my memories and I will miss him so.  He and I have only known each other for about 6 years but it sure doesn’t take long to get to know him.  Our friendship all started when I began dating Tammy.  Very early into our relationship, Tammy invited me to Mike and Terry’s anniversary dinner with our family at Buca di Beppo an Italian restaurant on the Plaza and that’s when I first really got to meet the real Curtis. 

Before Tammy and I arrived, she gave me fair warning Curtis is capable of doing just about anything, and warned me it is almost impossible to prepare for his pranks.  Knowing this, I still chose to go to dinner anyways.  Well, all seemed to be going smoothly though dinner and the conversations continued to be good and Curtis seemed to be behaving, or so I thought. Dinner was finished and we were at the point of leaving the restaurant, when suddenly Curtis grabbed me and proceeded to act as he was going to though a big lip lock on me and kiss me goodbye. 

Wow, I was shocked, caught off guard and never in my life had a man ever tried to kiss me!  Believe me, it was such a close encounter he almost did it to, but I was very fortunate he blocks the kiss with his hand, and he began to laugh in his very big way, and said; 

 “Welcome to the family, you’d better get used to this because it doesn’t stop from this point forward.” 

After that, I knew what I was up against – a man who would go beyond extremes to make us all humored, and welcomed.  He pulled several tricks off-n-on throughout our time together and somehow he knew exactly what to do and when to do it, I never quite figured that out. 

I also learned from Curtis he loved his family deeply and dearly.  His attentiveness with everyone touched our hearts forever and sadly will be missed.  All the emails, all the drop-ins, all the phone calls, all the consultations, all the debates, all the travel trips together and mostly I miss just seeing him in person.

I wish we would have had the opportunity to meet Curtis and thank him for protecting us as he dedicated his life to the United States Army. Now he is home in the loving arms of our father. Curt was a good man. I enjoyed talking with him. I will miss him but will have fond memories from 88H school and talks we had. I thank God that I was able to know him as I did. I pray that the Lord will give Chris and Lisa the comfort that only He can give for in that comfort you will be able to comfort others. Chis, if I was there with you know I'd give you a big hug and will give you one next time I see you.

Curtis's first grandchild, Allison Grace Carver, was born today, Oct 4, about 10:15 am. She weighed 6 lb 7 oz; 18 1/4 in long. She has dark hair. Lisa & Allison are doing great. Lisa had Joe (baby's father), Aunt Terry & Aunt Tammy & Uncle Mike and cousins Jackie & Jeri with her.  Curtis lives on in Allison. He would have been sooo happy.

My thoughts and comments, 
 
On Tuesday 9-28-10 in the early hours of the morning we received word that we lost Curt and he had been in a terrible auto accident on Northbound 71 Highway just south of Main Street .  The car apparently went off the road on the east side came back, broke a tie rod and slammed into a section of the concrete barrier.  The car destroyed the barrier with half of the car in the northbound side and half in the southbound side.  The car was still in one piece.  From everything we are seeing and hearing at this point, to us it appears he had a heart attack on the way to the office.  Fortunately, this was a one car accident and we are thankful on one else was hurt or injured. 

Now some say why he was going to the office at 0200, well Curtis works for DFAS, formerly Marine Corps Finance Center .  Every Marine in the world is paid out of this office and he is a very dedicated employee and he did what ever it takes to get the job done even if it means coming in at 0200. 

On the Thursday evening at 0500 to 0700 we held a visitation and at 0700 we had a funeral for Curt.  The visitation and funeral was attended by many from his school, his work, Parents Without Partners, neighbors, Patriot Guard, American Legion, family and friends.  The funeral service was absolutely beautiful.  The minister talked about his ideas, beliefs, views, attitude, devotion, commitment, perseverance, and passion.  

Towards the end of the service Curtis had requested three bagpipers perform Amazing Grace.  With that the funeral director opened up a huge clear garage door at the side of the church and there the bagpipers where.  You could barely see their images thru the glass before the doors were opened.  It was such a beautiful night that the doors remained open. 

On the afternoon of October 2, 2010 at our family cemetery near Edwards, MO (just south of Warsaw , MO ) we laid to Curt to rest.  For this occasion Curt had request the Patriot Guard to be the Pallbearers, so with that the family opened up the invitation to all of the Patriot Guard.  Doc and Max were our Ride Captains (RC).  Max volunteered and with MrFixIt; they brought the flags to the cemetery.  Every rider in attendance traveled no less than one hundred miles one way to be there. 

We had the two Lew Brothers, one coming in from the Kansas City , MO area and other coming in from Arkansas .  Doc, TinyB, Wingnut, Kayak, came in from the Johnson County, KS area, 8ball, Joker and RedDog came in from the Kansas City, MO. Kai came in from Manhatten, KS, Stretch came in from deep southern Kansas and we are not sure from which direction the General’s Driver and General came in from.  They travel like the wind. 

Normally we conduct our Riders’ meeting well before the family arrives but with Curt being one of our own and our family knows a lot about what we do, we conducted the meeting in the presence of the family.  I asked Doc to take the lead for the meeting as he has been the RC on so many missions Curt and I have been on.  Doc normally always starts each meeting with “We are here today to honor and pay respect to fallen soldier…. 

But today Doc simply started by paying tribute to Curt about his dedication as a Patriot Guard.  He talked about Curt traveling in all kinds of weather; wind, rain, heat, sleet, hail, and snow with the top down on his convertible because for Curt if the bikers do it then so should he. 

As Curt was military and our family is heavy military, I wanted to take a little time out to devote some attention to our family.  Wingnut presented Uncle Joe with a nice certificate of appreciation of his military service from the House of Representatives along with a Challenge Coin from the Welcome Home to our Vietnam Vets that was held at the Truman Library.  We presented Uncle Joe with some of the ribbons from the medals he had earned in his many years of Military Service as he had lost all of them in a recent fire.  We presented Uncle Joe with the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Vietnam Campaign Ribbons. 

To add to our Ride meeting and something like this usually always come up, I told the group that Dick Kiefer, my stepfather was Army, my father 1st LT James C. Jacobs was Army, my brother Curt was Army, I asked Uncle Joe – Army, Mike Flowers Sr. – Army. 

Then I ask Joe, Lisa’s significant other and he stated “UNITED STATES AIR FORCE – SIR!!!  Many brought a chuckle and then Uncle Joe chimed in – “The only smart one in the bunch!” 

From there the Patriot Guard turned the services over to Kibby George , our friend and funeral director.  During the service Kai added in emotional terms; the escort out and the return of Chris from Iraq with Curt.  Wingnut stated how he first met Curt whereby Curt stopped and asked permission to hold a flag on a mission.  This sounded just like something Curt would do. 

Curtis Jacobs received full Military honors.  The folded flag was presented to his son Chris with Lisa at his side. 

To the Patriot Guard and the American Legion Riders, on behalf of our family, we sincerely thank all for the thoughts, the emails, the calls, the cards, the prayers, the attendance, the messages, the hugs and all of the caring.  Curt introduced me to a whole new world of friends and without him I probably would have never known. 

To Curt, we sincerely thank you for your devoted service to our country and your continued pressure on all of our citizens and our politicians to do the very best for our country.  You truly tried to make this world a better place to live.  Curt - I promise you that you will never be forgotten.

Curtis was so happy that he had "finally" gotten IRS and Kansas taxes paid off. He was finally at peace with his finances. He was sooo much in love with Rita and was looking forward to marrying her. He was the most considerate to me of all my children and often brought me love gifts for no special reason. He kept my computer going, my yard mowed and anything else he could. I always felt Curtis would go first because he lived such a high stress life -- always pushing himself to get more done. He was on the road so much I was always concerned about him having an accident but never dreamed it would be so close to home. As long as I live he will live on in my heart, mind, spirit and soul. He tried to be the best father & friend for his children. He was a wonderful son, brother and uncle. He loved to "shock", suprise, or trick anyone he could. His first grandchild will be born tonight or tomorrow. We will not let Allison Grace forget what a wonderful Grandfather he would have been. I miss him so much. His mother, Wanda Kiefer

Words cannot begin to express our sadness when we heard of your brother's passing.  Alan, you always spoke so highly of Curtis, and we knew that he must have been a very special person indeed. I was shocked and saddened to hear about Curtis, he had such spirit and an intensitiy towards anything he had a passion for, and I enjoyed teasing him about his political views among other things, he was such a good sport about it. Even though I've know Wanda for many, many years and Curtis for only a few short years, I will miss him dearly and can't imagine my Monday nights at TOPS without him.

Curtis was a great inspiration to me. I knew him from TOPS and he was a good Leader, and will truly be missed. A really sad loss.
