Sunlight found its way through a south facing window at twilight on a cold January day resting gently on Lois’ face and as the sun faded into dusk Lois followed the sun. Lois Patten, born on June 11, 1947 in Grand Rapids MI, died peacefully on January 28, 2025, after a long struggle with kidney disease. She was the beloved daughter of Charles and Lorraine Gabert who preceded her in death. Her death was also preceded by the passing of her cherished brother, Timothy.
Lois was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her time with us was marked by her abundant love and affection for family and friends, including her furry friends. She loved spending quiet time outside on warm sunny days whether by the backyard pool or going on walks. A lake or beach was her happy place. Lois was a person of strong faith, generosity, and conviction who had a huge heart and truly cared for the welfare of all those around her. She was also a lover of animals and long time supporter of animal rescue organizations.
Lois is survived by many who will miss her including her loving sister and best friend Janice (Gabert) Berghuis and Janice’s husband Charles Berghuis. She is survived by her aunt, Ruth Bryk and cousins Michelle and Jeff (Katherine) Bryk. Lois relished her role as aunt as well. She leaves behind her niece Holly Mattson (Lieske), Holly’s husband Charlie and their children Ella and Sam as well as her nephew Chris Lieske, his wife Cyndi, and their sons Kelly and Colton. Lois is also survived by her beloved stepdaughter Lara (Robert) Norris and step-granddaughter Larisa (Christopher) McClelen.
After graduating from Michigan State, Lois began a long and successful public service career with the State of Michigan where she was initially a parole officer. After earning her Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University, Lois received a promotion to Area Manager for Region II (Grand Rapids) where she served with distinction for many years.
Lois chose to live a life of love and compassion and her legacy will carry-on forever on our hearts.
We are truly grateful to her caregivers provided through Gauthier Family Home Care and all the folks at West Michigan Hospice who helped us care for Lois during her final days.
