John Cornelius Sinke, age 103 of Grand Rapids, passed away on January 6, 2023. Born on September 28, 1919 to Martin and Bertha (Rosendale) Sinke, he was a lifelong resident of not only Grand Rapids, but Matilda Street. For John, Matilda Street is where he considered home for his entire life.
John bravely served in the United State Army during World War II. After an honorable discharge, John married Lorraine Beebe on February 6, 1947. Together they remained in Grand Rapids, raising their four children. John served as a firefighter for the City of Grand Rapids for 29 years. He enjoyed the camaraderie that came with being on the force, similar to what he felt with his Army buddies.
John and Lorraine loved spending time at Mullet Lake, fishing and taking annual camping trips. After retirement, John enjoyed bowling and playing cards. He was also an avid visitor of Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant. At home, you could find John puttering in his garden, tending to his annuals, marigolds and wife’s rose bushes. For his 100th birthday, John celebrated at his local bowling alley with lots of family, friends, and community members. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his children Pat (Butch) Welch, John Sinke, and Fran Buffington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; son Mike Sinke; daughter in law Linda; one grandchild; his parents, Martin and Bertha; and several siblings.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel. Military honors will take place at 3:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at Fairplains Cemetery.
