John Louis Regenmorter, 94 of Grand Rapids, passed away on March 5, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Florence, and his parents Louis and Nellie Regenmorter. He is survived by his children Beth Regenmorter, Louis Regenmorter, Jane (David) Knudsen and grandson Quinn Knudsen.
John was born in Grand Rapids on January 11, 1925. He graduated from Union High School, where he was on the debate team that won the state championship. During WWII, John served with the 106th Artillery Battalion in the Marshall Islands and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. After graduating from Northwestern University, John taught at Davenport High School in Davenport, Iowa where he met his wife Florence Elizabeth Clark. After they married, they moved to Muskegon where John taught at Muskegon Heights High School and coached the debate team to a state championship.
In 1960, they moved to Grand Rapids where John taught public speaking and coached the debate team at Grand Rapids Community College.
After John retired in 1988, he and Florence enjoyed traveling and spending the winters at Cape Coral, FL.
John was an avid fisherman who enjoyed fishing for trout and bluegill at the family cottage on Loon Lake. Golf was another favorite past time.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the GRCC Foundation-Regenmorter Scholarship Fund or Spectrum Hospice.
