Janice Roy Armstrong, of Grandville Michigan, passed away August 19, 2018, at the American House in Holland. She was born August 12, 1941, to Wesley and Ethel DeWit. She graduated from Holland Christian High School and earned an associate degree from Davenport University. Following High School, Jan worked at Buss Machine and Holland Furnace. After a few years in the working world, she felt called to serve her country and serve her country, she did. After serving active duty Navy, she then transferred to and retired from US Naval Reserve as a Chief Petty Officer Legalman. Following her years of active duty in the military, she worked 20 years for the city of Grand Rapids. She retired in 2011. Jan was a member of American Legion Furniture City Post 258. She served her Legion Post as Commander and also held many positions within the post over the years. She served as the Commander of the American Legion Fifth District for 2 terms. Jan was an active member of the United Veterans Council of Kent County and served as Commander. She was a member in good standing with the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. She was a continuous member of the Fleet Reserve Wolverine Branch 298 Grand Rapids since 1987. She served for several years as the Branch President and served on many committees. Last but certainly not least, Jan was selected Veteran of the Year for Kent County as a result of her constant giving back and continuing to service our nation’s greatest Veterans! Jan was a trailblazer for women serving in the military today. She opened many doors in the military and veteran organizations for future women willing to serve. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Carl Meyer, Jan is survived by her brothers, David & Dortha DeWit, Jill Mwaniki and Carla DeWit: Garry & Marian DeWit, Neil & Jackie DeWit and Michael DeWit: sister Linda Meyer, Christopher & Kristin Meyer and Brad & Amy Meyer. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews. A service of celebration and remembrance with full military honors will be on Friday, August 24 at 1:30 at Reyers North Valley Chapel: 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505.
