James Chester Corbett, age 85, passed away on January 13, 2024 at the Michigan Veterans Home of Grand Rapids. Jim was born on November 14, 1938 in Big Rapids the son of Chester & Emma (Davidson) Corbett.
Jim proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Later in life, health complications would develop from his service, and Jim became an advocate for many people ensuring their healthcare needs were handled properly.
After his honorable discharge, Jim settled in civilian life taking a job with the Social Security Administration. His career would span 40 years, before he retired. He was active for many years in the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club.
In July of 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Sharon. He was devoted husband, caring father, and loving grandpa. He loved animals especially his dogs, Zena and Paisley.
When Jim wasn’t working, he was frequently found using his HAM radio, and was known by his call sign W8BB. He loved technology, and was quick to purchase a computer for his home in the 1980’s. When texting became mainstream, he bought an iPhone. As soon as he learned, he would text you instead of a phone call, and it quickly became his preferred way of communication. Jim also loved to learn, and he always wanted the facts of whatever topic peaked his interest. The invention of Google helped Jim to keep up on everything he wanted to know.
A man with a generous heart, a boisterous laugh and personality, kind soul, Jim Corbett will be remembered for his devotion to his family.
Jim was preceded by his wife of 47 years, Sharon in 2016, his son Jay Blandford in 2022, his sister Janice Brocato and his parents.
He is survived by his children: Jamie Corbett, Terri Westerlund and Todd (Marlene) Blandford; his grandchildren: Jamie Lee Witt, Lindsey (Michael) Beckman, Tiffany Sanderson and Ashlea Blandford as well as several great-grandchildren.
