Gloria is survived by her husband of 21 years, Bill Kempf; mother, Rosa Sierk; daughters Noreen (Rob) Organek, Laurie (Jay Martinez) Blase; son, Michael (Heather) Blase; stepsons Kirk Kempf and Brian Kempf; first cousin, Ida (Steve) Bender; and many nephews, nieces, in-laws, and cousins.
She was the epitome of kindness and gentleness, a nana whose love and warmth knew no bounds to Samantha Organek, Zackary Blase, Rebecca Organek, Noah Blase, Tara Blase, and Hunter Kempf. Her memory will live on through her beloved grandchildren, who were her greatest joy in life. Mis amores.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Michael R. Blase, who passed away at the age of 52 in February 1996, and is now reunited in his loving arms. She is also preceded in death by her stepfather, Rudy Sierk; brother, Henry Sierk; and mother-in-law, Orpha Kempf.
Born in Santa Fe, Panama, Gloria lived there until the age of 14 when her mother married Rudy, and they moved to the United States. They settled on a farm in Indiana where Gloria started a new chapter of her life by learning English and beginning at a new high school. After graduation, she moved to Chicago and met her future husband, Michael, on a blind date. Together, they raised three children, moving several times before settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Gloria worked for almost 14 years as a paraprofessional at Alpine Elementary School, where she shared kindness and love with her students. She felt a special connection with them and had a deep desire to help these students whose first language was Spanish, like herself.
Known for her zest for life, Gloria loved to celebrate any and all occasions! She was known for sharing and we lovingly called her "article Mom." Gloria never missed an opportunity to wish you a happy birthday or send you a sympathy or get-well card. She cherished volunteering at her grandchildren’s schools, attending their sporting events, dancing, music, parties, the Red Hat Society, and her book club (both reading and drinking). She especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family. At one such event, she met her future husband, Bill. Given this second chance at love, she never wasted a minute. For the past few years, Gloria and Bill became snowbirds, spending time in Fort Myers, Florida, with close friends.
Her love of life was only matched by her devotion to her faith. A longtime member of the Catholic Church, she participated actively in prayer groups, always offering support and comfort to those in need. Her beautiful heart and generous spirit touched the lives of many. Gloria leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faith that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
