After high school, George attended Transylvania University in Lexington, KY where he earned his Bachelors of Arts in 1965. With diploma in hand, he settled into his career as a claims adjuster for AAA.
A man of faith, George found his church home at North Park Presbyterian where he was an elder. He was also very active in the community and served as the President of the North End Community Ministries for 20 years. Their mission to provide practical assistance to those in need on the Northeast side of Grand Rapids.
When he was relaxing, George was probably found in a boat. He was a member of the US Power Squadron and lifelong avid boater. His family has countless memories of their time spent at their cottage in 1000 Islands, New York. The water, whether one of his powerboats or paddling around in a canoe, brought peace to George.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Spencer Mandigo; his children: George Kevin (Laura)Mandigo of California, Deborah Lynn Mandigo of California; his stepchildren: Mark (Eloisa Titcomb) Mekkes of Florida, Michelle (Jeffrey) Mekkes Keyes of Grand Rapids; his grandchildren: Genesis (Larry) Rios-Mandigo, Jessica Lynn Mandigo, Juliet Kay Mandigo, Reese Mekkes, Angela (Dean) Haan, Amber Keyes; and his great-grandchildren: Jorge Rios-Mandigo and Aaron Bowers.
George was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ron Mandigo.
Visitation for George will be held on Thursday July 18, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Friday July 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at North Park Presbyterian Church. The family will receive from for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Plainfield Township Cemetery.
Memorial donations in George’s memory may be directed to North Park Presbyterian Church or North End Community Ministries (NECM).
