Assunta "Sue" Schneider (DeCastris), 86, went ahead to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Born on September 8, 1938 in Ferentino, Italy to Natalino DeCastris and Italia Celani. She was united in marriage on September 6, 1965 to Werner Schneider at St. Anthony Church in Rockford Illinois.
She is survived by her sons; Robert (Kelli) and Mark (Karen). She is also survived by grandchildren; Margaret, Abigail, Erin (Joey), and Caroline; brothers Luigi (Franca), Domenic (Nella), and Mario (Janie); many nieces, nephews and cousins; honorary daughter Katie Simpson-Lane; and special friends John & Marjie Weiss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Werner and parents, Natalino and Italia.
Assunta emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1962. After her marriage to Werner, they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in April of 1966 and started a family. She was a devoted wife and mother and along the way made many dear friends. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, but most of all being with people and sharing what she could. Trained in Italy as a seamstress, she worked for many years at Jacobson’s and Roger’s Department Store preferring to work on ladies clothing. She was a long time member of Blessed Sacrament Church and loved studying the Lord’s word. In her last years, she resided at Hathaway Hills Assisted Living in Greenville, MI where she grew to love the team that provided her excellent care. She will be deeply missed.
Visitation for Assunta will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 from 10am until time of the Funeral Mass at 11am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2275 Diamond Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Meals on Wheels of West Michigan or God’s Kitchen.
