Robert Edwin Mays passed away April 16, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born in Timpson, Texas on November 6, 1934 to parents Pauline Smith Mays and Dewey Mays. He grew up in Crandall, Texas with his family that included his sister Karen Charmaine who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Evelyn and son Edwin.
After graduation from high school Robert (Bob) started his lifelong career in the telecommunications industry working for Western Electric, a subsidiary of AT&T. His work took him to Monroe, Louisiana where he met, fell in love with and married Evelyn McKnight in 1961. They settled in a home across the Ouachita river in West Monroe and welcomed a son, Edwin David Mays, the next year. The family were members of the First Baptist Church of West Monroe.
Throughout the next four decades, Bob's work with AT&T took him to cities across the United States as he installed and supervised the build out of telephone offices that transformed electronic telecommunications technology. This work was an expression of two of Bob's defining characteristics: a probing curiosity and relentless drive to solve problems.
Outside of work, Bob was a devoted husband, loving father, loyal uncle and engaging friend. He loved being with family, telling stories, watching football, puttering around with his tools, and enjoying time with friends. He was a faithful example of Christ's command that we love our neighbor.
In 2003, he and Evelyn moved to a place in the country in Van Zandt County, Texas. There he continued his love of exploration, driving the local roads to small towns across the area. Sadly, years ago he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Despite the disease, his love of conversation and sense of humor remained until his passing.
Service arrangements are pending.
"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
