Jeanette Lohn Martin, 98, of Grand Prairie, Texas, passed away on December 26, 2023. She was born in Coleman, Texas on September 23, 1925, and settled in Grand Prairie, Texas in the late 1940’s, where she raised her family. Some of her most treasured memories were when she attended Texas Christian University, often reflecting on her times in the women’s dorm and college football. She graduated from the University of Detroit and received her master’s degree from the University of North Texas.
Like many of her generation, she supported the war effort. She worked at Camp Howze, near Gainesville, Texas where over 30,000 soldiers trained for World War II.
She married Arthur Barnes “A.B.” Martin on August 2, 1947, after meeting on a blind date and waiting for him to return from war. They were married for an extraordinary 68 years, until Martin’s passing in 2015. Together, they raised three children, Larry, Melody, and Karl and enjoyed sharing in life’s adventures. They were seasoned world travelers. Their home was filled with love, laughter, and warmth and often welcomed extended family and friends.
Jeanette worked as a teacher for decades until her retirement, teaching at Grand Prairie High School where she taught typing, business law, and shorthand.
Jeanette’s passions were her church, her family and shopping, especially at her “beloved Dillard’s.” She loved cooking and baking and considered chocolate sheet cake to be a southern delicacy. Every day was a good day for barbecue.
For many years, Jeanette and her husband led the youth fellowship program at the First United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie. To this day, members fondly remember their contributions.
She is survived by her son Larry Lohn Martin (Donna), daughter Melody Danhof (Gary), son Karl Lohn Martin (Andy), grandchildren Pamela Christine Perez (Nicholas), Brittany Pillers (Brian), Katie Noelle Cromeans (Joseph), Philip Hunter Danhof, Danielle Meri Banas (Ben) and many, many great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Barnes Martin, her mother Maggie Lohn, her father Earl Lohn, and her brothers Earl Lohn and Cecil Lohn.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at New Horizons and Sunrise Hillcrest of Dallas for their loving care of Jeannete over the years.
