Comilus Arvin Brown “Gunny/Sarge”, 81, life long resident of Grand Prairie, Texas passed away September 2nd, 2010 after a sudden illness. He was attended by his daughter, son-in-law, brother-in-law and close friend. Mr. Brown was born January 4, 1929 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Mr. D.T. Comilus Brown and Ms. Lois Pearl Holland Brown. His father D.T. C. Brown was Constable in Grand Prairie for many years. Arvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and Marine. He committed his live to the service of his country and other people. “Gunny” was a decorated Marine who served in the Korean War. He also volunteered for 12 years with Methodist Hospital in Dallas, delivered Meals on Wheels in Grand Prairie, VNA and was Chairman of the Grand Prairie Historical Commission. Arvin was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie and Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Whitney, and a life member of the Sam R. Hamilton and Thomas B. Hunter Masonic Lodges. He retired from DP&L/TXU after 40 years service. When asked by the Grand Prairie News on March 9, 2003 “If I had a different job, I’d….” Arvin said “….seek other opportunities to help older people.” His compassion for his fellow man has been instrumental in the establishment of local veterans’ recognitions, contributed to the knowledge base of Grand Prairie history and provided comfort and aid to friends and strangers alike.
While committed to helping others, Arvin was a devoted and loving family man. In the same 2003 interview with the Grand Prairie News, he was asked “I’m happiest when….” he stated “….when holding my great-granddaughter in my lap.” Arvin was preceded in passing by his wife Betty Armstrong Brown and daughter Linda Brown Carver. He is survived by his daughter Sherry Brown Watts, four grandchildren, Stacy Watts Ballard, Clint Watts, Michael Antelo and Kathryn Carver. Arvin also has seven great-grandchildren, Madison Ballard, Camden Ballard, Colter Ballard, Zach Antelo, Sydney Watts, Alexandra Watts, Carson Watts and Alan Carver. Funeral arrangements are being conducted by Bean-Massey-Burge of Grand Prairie. Arvin will lie-in-state at their location, 733 Dalworth Street, and visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM on September 6th. Additional information is available at www.bean-massey-burge.com.
