Charles grew up in Goodluck Community, attended school in Tona and at age 17 joined the National Guard. On September 30, 1938 he married Nina Ruth Woodridge and they had 3 children.
Charles attended Electronics School at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. Charles entered the Navy on July 7, 1943. He also attended Wright Jr. College in 1943, University of Houston in 1943. In 1944 he went from Corpus Christi Texas to Miami Florida. His family settled in Grand Prairie Texas in 1946.
A loving husband, father and grandfather who never met a stranger, Charles was a giving man who was a rock for his family. He was very detailed, could put anything together and enjoyed his wood craft. He was very fond of building grandfather clocks. He had a good sense of humor, supported you no matter what you wanted to do, and was good at giving advice. Charles enjoyed spending weekends at their Lake Whitney cabin, boating, water skiing, and fishing at the Naval Air Stations. His grandchildren have fond memories of riding a 2 seated bike and build a barb wire fence.
In 1950 Charles joined the Masonic Lodge 1031 Sam R. Hamilton. He was a Worshipful Master from 1997-1998. In August 1967 Charles retired from the US Navy as Rate E8-Chief Senior. He then worked for LTV for 8 years and Civil Service at Naval Air Stations for 2 ½ years. In 2004 Charles moved to Payne Springs, Texas – Cedar Creek Lake.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife Nina Ruth Gipson; sons Kenneth Ray Gipson, Charles Weldon Gipson, 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Survived by his daughter Janice Martin; grandchildren Todd Gipson, Sherry Baker, Traci Haney; great-grandchildren Amanda Hammel, Jilliam Anderson, Clayton Haney, Ryan Baker, Ben Gipson; great-great grandchildren Kayden Cowen, Jaxon Hammel and brother S.M Gipson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 6-8pm at Bean Massey Burge Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Seven Point, Texas at 2pm.
Burial will be Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 11:15am.
