Glen, age 96, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord, February 7th surrounded by family and caregivers at home in The Retreat at Harbor Cove Assisted Living center. He was loved by all who knew him.
Born May 22, 1922 in Monticello Utah to Walter H. Smith and Ella Gail Gillispie Smith. At the age of 2 weeks, Glen and his family moved back to Colorado where he, his three sisters and two brothers were raised working on the family’s 120-acre farm in the Appleton area.
He served during World War II in the U.S. Army 97th Infantry Division from Oct 1942 - Feb 14th, 1946 in both the European and Pacific Theaters.
Glen met his future wife Hazel V. Fortik at the COPECO Dance Hall. They married September 27, 1946. Hazel preceded him in death May 31, 2016.
He is survived by their 4 children, Barbara Dempsey of Casper WY, Walter “Wally” Smith (Lorraine) of Grand Junction, Susan Phillips (Larry) of Casper WY and Penny Higby of Lovelock NV, 8 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren.
His long career in construction began with building his own home on J road with hand cast adobe block and windows from an old railroad car. Following his retirement from United Companies he continued to supply the industry with oak survey and grade stakes, into his nineties.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Feb. 13, 2019 at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 2970 North Ave Grand Junction, CO.
