Jean was born in Ridgway, Colorado on July 28, 1933, to Verdon T. Grimes and Ellen M. (Crum) Grimes. Her formative years were spent in Paradox, Colorado where she helped her father as ditch rider, cat skinner for the power company, fruit tramp, and herded the family's goats, along with schooling. She was raised to ride horseback at a very young age, which made her as tough as any boy. Still a lady, she met Jim Moore and began an adventure together that took them all over Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. Jim liked to tell that when he met Jean, she was so wild that he had to tie her by the road for a week to get her used to cars!
Jim and Jean were joined in marriage on December 31, 1954. Jim joined the Pentecostal church ministry several years into their marriage, after a bout with kidney failure. He miraculously recovered and began preaching in communities like Fruita, Delta, Montrose, Naturita, and Cortez. Jean stood by his side and raised 8 children in the process. Together they touched the lives of many people throughout the area. They also spent time ministering to the Navajos, who would come to their home as Jim would sometimes preach all night!
Instilled with a strong work ethic, Jim provided for the family by mining, truck driving, electrician/lineman, and farming, as well as pastoring. Jean supported him by taking care of household duties, worked in the school cafeteria, taught Sunday school, held the office of church secretary, and raised her "ornery heathens".
Jim & Jean liked to fish and camp. They spent many Saturdays fishing Buckeye or Mira Monte reservoirs. They traveled to Alaska for 6 months and fished for salmon. They loved gardening and produced some of the largest produce at their home in Paradox in later years. Jean continued to fish, ride atv trails, and take short trips cross country after Jim's passing. She purchased a riding mule at the age of 77, with the help of her son, and rode for a couple of years. She also crocheted beautiful table clothes and Afghans for friends and family.
Jean is survived by her eight children, Virginia (David) Sylvestersen of Paradox, Janet Ali of Denver, James E (Patty) Moore of Mooresville, NC, Juanita (Calvin) Oliver of Moab, UT, Verdon E (Kim) Moore of Grand Junction, Joseph E (Lisa) Moore of Grand Junction, Jon E (Stacey) Moore of Glade Park, Heather (Steven) Mixon of Grand Junction; 25 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E Moore; father, Verdon T Grimes; mother, Ellen M. (Crum) Grimes; a daughter, Sandra Belmier; and a son, Mark Moore.
The memorial service is TBD, Nucla Cemetery.
