On Saturday, July 11, 2015 the beautiful soul of Mary LeBerta Rubalcaba left this world to join our heavenly Father. After calling BINGO one last time, she was surrounded by family in her final moments. Our beloved matriarch was born on March 24, 1924 to Santiago and Rafalia Gonzales in Delta, Colorado where she attended school with her seven siblings. She married Frank R. Rubalcaba on June 29, 1942. Together they had ten children. Mary was hard working, laboring in the fields and orchards in Delta, followed by work at Goodwill, St. Mary’s Hospital and on assembly lines, retiring from Holsom Bakery in Grand Junction.
She enjoyed camping, yard sales, playing numerous games, gardening, word searches, praying the rosary and crafting. She was a respected member of the Resident Advisory Committee at Mantey Heights -her home for many years. Mary continued to share jokes and stories with family, friends and caregivers until her passing.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five siblings, her daughter, LaVonne, her son-in-law, Wayne Fladeland, and three grandsons. She is survived by her daughters, Anna Neam (Doug) and Isabel Fladeland and sons, Joe (Marge), Ron (Rosella), Andy (Toni), and Santiago (Flora) of Grand Junction, CO; sons Ben (Carolyn) of Baltimore, MD and Alvin (Christy) of Las Vegas, NV; twenty-six grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Irene of Denver and June of Phoenix, AZ.
Mary was truly a pillar of support and love for family and friends, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew her. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She also had many “adopted” children and grandchildren who were special to her. Mary touched many lives and will be remembered for her love of God and family, her determination, wisdom, strength, sense of humor, generosity and compassion for others. Her family is grateful for the loving care she received from the Mantey Heights staff, whom Mary was so fond of.
Visitation will be at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary on Monday, July 20 from 5 to 7 pm with rosary at 7 pm. Mary’s memorial mass will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 21 at 10 am with burial immediately following at the Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Lunch will then be served at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Donations may be made to a memorial in Mary’s name to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or to Catholic Outreach.
