Marion Gladys Preston Maddock passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on December 12 at Aspen Ridge Care Center. She died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Marion was born in Bethany, Ontario, Canada, July 23, 1929, the sixth of a family of twelve. Her parents were Harry B. and Mabel L. Preston, who owned and operated a very successful farm on the outskirts of Bethany.
Marion’s early education was in the Bethany Country School until eighth grade. She graduated from Lindsay High School, and later received a secretarial degree from the Lindsay Collegiate Institute. She was known locally and in her profession for a phenomenal ability to take shorthand.
On a visit to her sister in Anchorage, Alaska, Marion joined a ski club and during a ski outing, she met Harley who loved her at first sight. They were married six months later on June 21, 1952. They enjoyed 64 years of loving togetherness.
Marion adapted easily to locations of the eight assignments related to Harley’s management position with A&AFES around the world, including Germany and South Korea. She met the challenges of the different cities, environments, and housing by helping other wives and families on the various military posts and bases.
After retiring and moving to Grand Junction in 1986, Marion combined two passions – volunteering and sewing – and for twelve years devoted time, energy, and skills at two assisted living facilities in Grand Junction and one in Palisade, sewing and mending for the residents. Marion received several service and appreciation awards, including the South Korean Sub-district Service Award in 1975, Community Service Award for Western Colorado, and Mission Recognition for United Methodist Women.
Marion, a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Grand Junction, enjoyed assisting with church fellowship and fund raising events. She also enjoyed hiking, golf, and playing bridge with friends.
Marion is survived by her loving husband, Harley; two brothers, Barry and Meredith; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Steve.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church at Fifth and White on Monday, December 19, at 2PM.
