November 26, 1919 – September 22, 2011
Lois Wolverton Tufly passed away September 22 after a brief illness. She left this earth surrounded by the loving warmth of her family and friends, who will miss her dearly.
Lois was born to Leila Foy Wolverton and Norville Edwin Wolverton in Sego, UT, the third of six children. She attended schools in Sego, Moab and Palisade before attending the new Fruita Union High School. She was a member of its first graduating class in 1937. She married her high school sweetheart, Fruita Union football star, Howard Tufly, on November 18, 1939. Together they had three children, Bernita, and twins, Darrell and Darlene.
Her family was always Lois' top priority, and she spent the ensuing years raising her children and helping to run the family dairy farm. When she wasn't baking her world-famous biscuits or donuts she could be found milking cows, plowing fields, or doing any one of the thousand other chores that came along with running a successful dairy. Years later she went back to college, earning numerous awards for superior work and dedicated attendance.
She also became a familiar face to shoppers in downtown Fruita, working as a sales clerk at both Fruita Drug and Fruita Clothing Store. She once shared her philosophy of life as, "When I look in the mirror in the evening I will have lived that day so I can say to myself, ' I like you; have a good night's rest,' and in the morning when I look in the mirror I can say to myself, 'Yes, I like you; have a good day'".
She was a great lover of games, never met a cryptogram, Sudoku or puzzle she couldn't conquer. She also was an avid card player, spending decades beating her family at "Hand and Foot". Her family will miss Lois' enthusiastic laugh, her loving spirit, and her never-ending quest for learning.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; two brothers, Norville and Ted Wolverton, and three sisters, Winnie Pene Lowes, Barbara Edling, and Violet Granat. She is survived by her son, Darrell (Joyce) of Medford, OR, and two daughters, Bernita (Bob) Perala of Cheyenne, WY, and Darlene (Clyde) Boyce of Montrose, CO. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren, and 24 beautiful, talented and smart great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Martin Mortuary on Monday, September 26, 2011 from 5 - 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at Martin Mortuary Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with a graveside service to immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, CO.
