December 9, 1922– March 25, 2011
Joseph "Joe" Procopio was born December 9, 1922 in Omaha Nebraska to Sam and Catherine Procopio. He was welcomed into heaven on March 25, 2011. Joe was the youngest of four children and spent his childhood in Omaha where he graduated high school. When duty called at age 18, Joe joined the Army and proudly served in World War II. Shortly after being discharged he moved to California and then settled in Grand Junction in the late 1980's where he opened his own hardware store and then started numerous remote Post Offices. During his 88 years he was married and divorced twice. Joe's hobbies included watching tennis, eating out, and spending time with friends. But most of all Joe lived to help others. He was truly The Good Samaritan. Not only did Joe help countless people in the Grand Valley overcome difficult times both financially and personally, but he contributed thousands of dollars to families with sick children, to Christmas gift drives for needy kids and he gave endless dollars to help the homeless. In fact tonight many homeless people have tents and sleeping bags because of Joe Procopio. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Sam; mother, Catherine; brothers, Pete and Louis, and sister, Angeline. He has many family members in Omaha including his cousins, Jim, Gary, and Tony Procopio who he always spoke of fondly; two step sons, Lloyd and Glen Fischel, plus countless friends in the Grand Valley who do not see him as anything less than family. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at at 10:00 a.m. at Martin Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children's Backpack Program at numerous Churches in Grand Junction
