John Wayne Champagne, affectionately known as Papa, Papa Weinee & Boss Man, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024, at the age of 63 at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, after a long-fought battle with liver cancer.
A native of Delcambre, Louisiana, and a resident of Grand Junction, Mr. Champagne was a loving family man who cherished spending time with his grandchildren and his partner, Roy, fishing, and bringing joy to others through his humor. He worked tirelessly throughout his life, first as a carpenter and later as a general manager for Exxon in Arkansas. He was equally renowned for his culinary skills, delighting guests with his exceptional cooking and warm hospitality. His infectious love for singing, especially his playful "I'm so good looking" song, brought laughter and fond memories to his kids and grandkids. Known for his generosity and selflessness, John was beloved by all who knew him. He dedicated his life to helping others and caring for his family. He leaves behind his partner of five years, Roy Kibel, three daughters: Raven Hunter, Lacey Champagne (Eric), and Amber Chandler (Dylan) all of Delcambre, LA, one son: Ryan Bowden (Autumn) of Russellville, AR, eight grandchildren: Raine Holtz, Braitlyn Lisenby, Leila Lee, Nevaeh Lee, Danae Lee, Briara Lafleur, Ella Savoie, and Lili Mire. He is also survived by two sisters: Susan Sons and Delana Champagne, one brother: Elie Champagne Jr., numerous nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law: Bonnie Champagne and Grace Champagne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elie Champagne Sr. and Audrey Lange Champagne, two brothers: Rayford Champagne and Larry Champagne, one sister: Rita Breaux, one nephew: Matthew Breaux, his partner of 12 years, Mark Bowden, and one brother-in-law: Neal Sons. Memorial services will be held at a later date to celebrate his life and legacy.
