Joey was born on November 4, 1958, in Uravan Colorado, the son of Fred and Mary Ann Chavez. Joey worked for the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Department for 20 years and during this time he served as sheriff for two terms. He then continued to serve his community in various ways. He was a hard-working, faithful, kind man with a big heart who loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marlene Garcia Chavez of Grand Junction, CO; his mother, Mary Ann Chavez of Grand Junction; one daughter, Nichole Lee Chavez and husband Isaac, of Grand Junction; son Freddy Lee Chavez and wife Brittany, of Dolores; son Joseph Michael Chavez and wife Heidi, of Palisade; and grandchildren: Arianna Chavez and Amiya Jones, of Grand Junction; Cameron, Taylor, and Kendall Chavez, of Dolores; Joseph Jr. and Trista Chavez of Palisade. Other family survivors include one sister; Ramona Ann Mills and husband Brett Mills, of Delta; “Tito Chavez,” his pet companion; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, and extended family. Joey Chavez was preceded in death by his father, Fred Elude Chavez, and his brother, Freddy Lee Chavez.
A visitation for Joey will be held Monday, November 29, 2021 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary & Crematory, 2515 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction, Colorado 81505. A rosary will occur Monday, November 29, 2021 at 7:00 PM, 2515 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction, Colorado 81505. A mass of christian burial will occur Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 628 Meeker St., Delta, CO 81416. A burial will occur Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 11:30 AM at Mesa View Cemetery, 660 1725 Rd., Delta, CO 81416.
