Helen Krey, of Grand Junction, passed away March 5, 2020. Helen was the oldest child of Anton and Rosina (Wyss) Mothes. She was born in Sylvia, Kansas and grew up on a farm with two younger brothers, Irvin and John.
Helen was a registered nurse, attending nurse’s training at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas and in St. Louis, Missouri. She later was a nursing instructor at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver and at Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction.
Helen married Max Krey in 1951 in Hutchinson, Kansas. They moved to Grand Junction in 1954.
Helen was kind and compassionate. She was a good listener and thoughtful of others. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the United Methodist Women and Book Club, served as chairman of the Education Committee and Staff/Parish Relations Committee, and was a Stephen’s Minister. She studied the Bible and took several Bible classes. Helen loved music and played the piano; she was a founding member of the Grand Junction Symphony Guild and Wednesday Music Club. She was a member of PEO Chapter GF and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.
Helen is survived by her husband, Max; children, Mark of Grand Junction, and Marina (Bruce) Young of Grand Junction. She is also survived by granddaughters, Rachel (Phil) Nieto of Denver and Sarah Young of Las Vegas, Nevada; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held later. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Colorado Mesa University Foundation for the Helen Krey Scholarship, or the Grand Junction Symphony, or First United Methodist Church.
