Gene P. Alexander, age 86 of Grand Junction, CO, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Capella of Grand Junction. Gene was born in Porter, OK on October 8, 1937 to Sumner D. Alexander and Mamie Bernard Alexander. Gene spent his childhood in Muskogee, OK where he graduated from Muskogee High School in 1956. As a young man, Gene put his faith and trust in Jesus Christ as savior. He served in the music ministry for many years. He went on to study at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK where he graduated with a Bachelor of Art’s Degree in May of 1962. In March of 1962, Gene married Susan Sheffield in Ft. Gibson, OK and remained married for 51 years until her death in March of 2013. In the summer of 1962, Gene accepted a teaching position at School District # 51 in Grand Junction, CO in Mesa County where he taught for 30 years. He later obtained his Masters in Education.
During his retirement, Gene enjoyed his choral group, wood carving, gardening, golfing, hiking, and traveling. He also enjoyed serving his neighbors with their gardens and along with his wife, enjoyed their home on Kannah Creek in Whitewater, CO.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Sumner and Mamie Alexander; his step-mother, Hazel Alexander; his wife, Susan; and his sister, Patsy Langton.
Survivors include his close friends, Janet Blackman, Marvin “Gus” and Gwen Sublett, Verne and Pat Stelter and numerous other friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church, 720 Grand Ave., Grand Junction, CO on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gene’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association-Grand Junction Office, 2232 N 7th St, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
