Freda M. Fiegel passed away at Bonnell Extended Care Thursday, March 13th, 15 yars to the day after her husband, Leo, passed away. She was 94.
Freda was born at 1212 Champa Street in Denver, July 11th, 1919. Her mother and father, John and Mary McDowell, moved her and her two brothers to Palisade shortly there after. Her family started and ran a coal mine, where I-70 crosses the Colorado river at the foot of the Bookcliffs. You can see the remains today. She grew up in Palisade where she graduated and was crowned Colorado Peach Queen in Denver.
She married Leo Fiegel in Grand Junction. They raised peaches and four children on Orchard Mesa, until they moved to North Ave in 1950. After several years they moved to a farm North East of Fruita. In 1961, the farm was sold and they moved the family to Orchard Mesa. While living there Freda and Leo started Leos Campers and Trailers in Grand Junction. They ran the RV business with their sons for 25 years.
She and Leo started an RV Club, were chartered members of an antique car club, and were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Freda was a member of the Redlands Womens Club, Alter society and enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include Carol O'Connor, Leo ""Teek"" Fiegel, both of Grand Junction, and Jeanne Fiegel and Steve Fiegel both of Greeley, Colorado. Freda has 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren (one on the way) and four great-great-grandchildren (two on the way).
Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday the 17th of March, 2014, at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 F Road in Grand Junction. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. on the same day.
