Charles was born on July 31, 1955, in Alamosa, Colorado, to Frank and Eliria (Rael) Avila. He attended school in Leadville, and after graduation, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in December of 1975. Charles spent the next four years in service to his country, and was honorably discharged in 1980. Charles also resided in Craig, Colorado, and it was there that he worked at Tri-State Power Plant and as a restaurant cook in both Craig and Steamboat Springs. In 2005, Charles made Grand Junction his home. In his free time he enjoyed reading and solving crossword puzzles, but nothing was more important than time with his family, especially his grandkids.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Andrea (Danny) Snow of Grand Junction, and Desiree’ Madrid of Denver; brothers, Toby (Viola) Avila of Denver, Frank (Rose) Avila of Pueblo, Joe (Thelma) Avila of New Mexico, Wilbert (Delma) Avila of Leadville, Raymond (Linda) Avila of Gypsum, and David (JoAnn) Avila of Leadville; sisters, Fran (Joe) Kleber, Patsy (Delbert) Ortega, and Sylvia Avila, all of Leadville; his grandchildren, Domenic Ciani, Zane Phillips, and Jazmin Snow; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Eliria Avila, and siblings, Roger (Ida), Leroy, Patrick, and Gloria (Robert).
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Martin Mortuary. A military honors service will follow at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
