Robert “Bob” Hiller and Anna Martini Hiller built a wonderful life of 67 years together until Bob’s death in 2011.
Bob was the 4th of 6 children born in Tacoma, Washington to Harry Hiller Sr and Glovina Moon Hiller. He was raised in Tacoma until he and his brothers joined the Merchant Marines and sailed for Standard Oil Company out of California during World War II.
Anna was born in the small coal mining village of Sopris, Colorado in the hills just outside of Trinidad, Colorado. She was the third of 5 children born to Valentine Martini, an Italian immigrant, and Josephine Jarazinska Martini, a Polish immigrant. Life in Sopris was very simple but filled with the love and laughter of the many different cultures that formed these mining communities.
Anna moved as a young woman to Richmond, California to help her brother and his wife with their first child. While working in an ice cream shop, she met Bob, the love of her life. Bob came ashore after the birth of their first child, and continued to work for Standard Oil/ Chevron for 42 years.
Family and faith were always the most important things to Bob and Anna, and they raised their 3 children to be strong and faithful in each. Bob’s job took the family from Richmond to Bountiful, Utah, then to 17 years in Grand Junction at the Gilsonite Plant, and finally back to Bountiful where Bob retired. Anna lived in their home there until she was 98, when she then moved back to Grand Junction to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
We were fortunate to have had her living here for the last 17 months of her life. The extended family, friends, Hope West Hospice caregivers, and her caregivers from Must Love Seniors helped to make this possible.
Robert and Anna are survived by Anna’s sister Clara, their children, Ron, Jeanne, and John, son-in-law Richard, and by 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A mass for Anna will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 276 E 1700 S, Bountiful, UT 84010. A mass will occur Monday, January 15, 2024 at 9:30 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 790 26 1/2 Rd., Grand Junction, Colorado 81506.
