Rebekah Suzanne Augenstein, age 14, was promoted to glory on Friday, November 7 at Mott Children’s Hospital following a valiant 2-1/2 year battle with leukemia. As the Augenstein family’s angel on earth she went to be with the Lord who created her and in whose arms they entrust her, the Lord Jesus Christ. Rebekah was born on December 19, 1999 during a blinding snow storm in northern Iowa and was given little hope of survival due to congenital defects. After two heart surgeries, an experimental lung treatment, and two eye surgeries over a three month period she defied the odds, came home and immediately brought great joy to her family.
Rebekah was a fighter all her life; what came easily to others required much additional effort for her yet she was never one to complain or to feel sorry for herself. She had no time for such things but lived in the moment and enjoyed her life to the fullest. She was a completely authentic person and quickly became the focal point of her family and ruled as queen much to everyone’s delight.
She loved swinging and spending Saturday nights at her brother Josiah’s house. She also loved watching movies and sleeping in her sister Bethany’s bedroom. She also enjoyed watching Ipad videos with her niece Charlotte. Rebekah was a part of The Salvation Army Flint Citadel church family where she was known to sing along with the choir from the front pew on Sunday mornings.
She loved her teachers, Jared Jonas, Bab Abdella and Barb Fetrow and classmates and was the peacemaker in her class. She loved Disney movies most recently Frozen and watched it over and over never tiring of it. She loved coloring and spent her days in the hospital coloring book after book.
Rebekah is survived by her mom, Kris and dad, Jon, sister Joy, brother Robert and his wife Laura and niece Charlotte, brother Josiah and wife Lauren, and special sister Bethany. She was also a kindred spirit with friend Catherine.
A Celebration of her life will be held at The Salvation Army Flint Citadel, 211 West Kearsley in downtown Flint, on Tuesday, November 11 at 6:00 pm. Visitation will be held an hour before the service.
