Marcella was born August 17, 1935 in Homestead, Pennsylvania to John and Mary (nee Vebostak) Kayko. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan. After graduation, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Oxford as Sister Mary Hyacinth. Marcella graduated from Siena Heights with a BA and from Aquinas College with a Master's Degree in Teaching. She taught in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Flint, Detroit, and was principal of Our Lady of Lakes in Waterford. While she was an employee of the Flint Board of Education, she was assigned as a Title I Chapter 3 Math Teacher and was nominated as "America's Teacher of the Year".
She was very active in the United Teachers of Flint, the Michigan Council Teachers of Math, and the Flint Association Council of Teachers of Flint. She headed committees for the training of teachers and leadership of professional; while representing Flint at city and state level educational committees.
Marcella received awards from the MEA, MCTM, FI Bd of ED, and UTF. Teaching infused her life for forty three years. Her spirit was heightened by the successes of her students.
The philosophical ideals of peace and justice directed her life. Participating in PAX CHRISTO Bethlehem Peace Pilgrimage, Sacred Heart Catholic Church activities with Ft. George Zabelka as a leader and spiritual director, and a worldwide traveler for this goal. Later, she continued to travel for broadening of knowledge, and learning of cultures, languages, and customs.
Visitors will be greeted from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 10 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton, Michigan. Father David Harvey presiding. In state from 10:30am until time of mass. Interment following at Crestwood Cemetery, Grand Blanc.
