Heading toward her 102nd birthday, Jane was the oldest living McCahill of all-time. She lived just more than twenty years after the passing of her husband, Johnny Mahalic. The two were married for 61 years.
Jane was a remarkable survivor. At age nine, she was in a major car crash. Jane was thrown completely through the windshield. She survived, but was left with major scars. Miraculously, she suffered no broken bones.
Jane's family believed that this accident activated her survival gene to live on into the 21st century.
Jae was a stellar high school athlete at Abington high school in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. She was a gifted athlete in field hockey and often scored nearly every point of every game on her varsity basketball team. She was extremely well coordinated and had an instinctive touch on all her basketball shots.
After high school, Jane enrolled in Temple University in Philadelphia where she soon met football star, Johnny "Harry" Mahalic.
Following a one-year engagement, Jane married Johnny in 1942. The two had their wedding reception at the Cotton Club in NYC, courtesy of the club owner, "Mr. Duffy", the father of Jane's childhood best friend, Winniford.
After just a few weeks of marriage, Johnny went off to fight in the Philippines and Japan in WWII and Jane moved back with her parents. Jane worked as a secretary until Johnny returned as a decorated war hero in 1945, emaciated and sick with malaria from the war.
Mum thereafter gave birth to her first of three sons, Philip Anthony in 1947 when Johnny was a teacher and football coach for Kingston high school in New York. Mum's second son, Lance, was next born in Endicott, NY, followed by Drew, born in Albany, NY.
Jane was a model American mother for her three sons. She was involved in PTA, and all school activities. Jane even coached her boys' basketball teams.
Jane never missed making lunch everyday for her children. She tutored her sons in school constantly. She set an example for their spiritual development as Roman Catholics by never missing Mass, and saying Rosaries aloud while she did household chores each day.
Jane was a champion-level bridge player with a keen mind. She met weekly with friends, all of whom adored her. Jane always had a kind word to say about everyone she ever met. Everyone who met Jane instantly liked her sense of warmth, compassion, and kindness.
Later in life, Jane was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Katie, Michael, Mary, Stephen, Joey, Elizabeth. Jane also had six great grandchildren: Cohen, Fitz, Eila, Kaia, Harry and Morgan Jane, giving her twelve direct descendants.
For a time, Jane lived alone, self-sufficiently in Grand Blanc, Michigan following the passing of husband, Johnny. She spent the last decade of her life living with her oldest son, Fr. Philip Mahalic, in Schertz, Texas. While in Texas, Jane was a happily engaged member of the Catholic Church at the Randolph Air Force Base.
Jane passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 25, 2023.
Just prior to her passing, Jane was visited by several infant great grandchildren who got to meet her for the first time with more than 100 years difference between them.
Jane's entire family: sons, grandchildren, daughters in-law Cindy and Joan, godchild Diana, dear friends Jan and Autumn adored her profusely. They have faith that Jane is now in a better place with each family member who had passed before her, and was there to welcome her as her life transcends to a higher realm.
For the family members left behind, we all trust that we may all meet again.
