George W. Hammitt, 94, died unexpectedly November 18, 2024, at home. He was born February 4, 1930, in Johnson City, Tennessee. The son of Gunnery Rasters Hammitt and Helen Jane Moore. George graduated from Pontiac Central High School Class of 1948. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Marines until 1952. He had two important loves in his life, Norma Evans who preceded him in death, and later in life, Mary Woodard who also preceded him in death. He worked for the Detroit Police Department for two years before finding his career with General Motors where he retired from. George was an amateur golfer who won many tournaments and was on his way to becoming a professional golfer as a career, but after having a car accident he was forced to just play golf as a pastime. He loved watching The Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings. He was also an avid gambler. His favorite place to go was Las Vegas. He traveled there many, many, many times even living there during the winters for several years.
George was the epitome of cool, a great man that always had a smile and a story to tell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Navarre, brother-in-law Gerald Navarre; aunt Eugena Felts, uncle John Felts; nephews David Navarre and David O’Berry. He is survived by his, niece Christine O’Berry; great nephews Anthony (Tiffany) O’Berry, Jerald (Brandi) O’Berry, Eric O’Berry; great great nieces and nephews, Marty, Cheyenne, Taylor, Dakota, Skylar, Haley, Sierra, Jaden, Tonilyn, Charlotte; great great great nieces, Aurora, Coralee, Hadley and McKenzie. George is also survived by Mary Woodards daughter, Sandy Woodard and granddaughter, Heather Woodard both of which he had a very close relationship with. No Funeral Service will be held; however, a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
