Calvin S. Lazar, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home in Marco Island, Florida on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023. Marco was the place where he truly found peace and happiness during the later years of his life. He was a daily presence on the beach, with his two fishing poles planted in the sand, and sitting on his special chair with a beach umbrella. He was nicknamed the Mayor of Marco beach. Calvin loved playing tennis almost daily at the Marco Island YMCA during the winter months, and at the Flint Tennis Club during summer.
Calvin was born in Flint, Michigan on October 10, 1925 to parents Samuel Lazar and Nancy Roovel Lazar. He had two brothers, Saul (oldest) and Cyrus (youngest). Calvin was a first generation Assyrian-American, and proud of his heritage. He married Dolores Eloise (Johnson) Lazar in June, 1954, and they were married for 58 years. All have predeceased him.
Surviving are his son Edvard (wife Elizabeth) Lazar and daughter Nancy (husband George Zachar) Lazar, and four grandchildren: Katherine (husband Brody Montoya) Lazar, Adam Zachar, Gregory Lazar, and Samantha Zachar.
Calvin attended the University of Michigan, and graduated from the Ferris State College of Pharmacy, class of 1951. He owned and operated pharmacies in the Flint area for over 40 years, including Eastside Pharmacy, Woods Drugs, and Sunset Drugs.
Calvin was a decorated World War II Army veteran, having served for two years as Private First Class in the 103rd Infantry Division, joining the service at age 18. He fought in 38 battles – including the Battle of the Bulge -- across France, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Among his medals earned were a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 10:30am with one hour of visitation prior to the service at Brown Funeral Home – 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. Interment will be at the Assyrian Cemetery in Flint with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Assyrian Cemetery 3112 Lewis St. Flint Michigan, in memory of Calvin.
