Dr. Thakoor Deen was born on April 27, 1934, in Georgetown, Guyana to Sadama and Bhagwantia. As the 3rd of 9 brothers and sisters, he served as an apprentice from a young age to his mother and quickly learned the skills of running the family business while teaching himself to read and write. Through ingenuity and a strong work ethic, he took on the responsibilities of book-keeping, accounting, and various other duties to help grow the business.
This was just the beginning of Dr. Deen's journey in a life of helping others, education, and excellence. Thereafter, he moved to London, England to study Chemistry and further his future. Displaying an unmatched intellect and the values he had acquired beginning in childhood, he succeeded as a student and went on to enroll at the University of London to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Deen continued his medical education at the university’s branch in Jamaica at the University of the West Indies, where he continued to excel. He rapidly became one of the best known and most respected physicians on the island. In late 1970, he met a nursing student by the name of Martha Ellen Morgan. He courted her for 6 months and they married on June 26, 1971. Nine months later in March of 1972, his first daughter, Sabena, was born. With the island facing the threat of communism, the young Deen family bravely decided to leave their home and migrated to the United States. On December 31, 1977, the Deen family arrived in Florida where they settled and have remained. In the following June of 1978, Dr. Deen’s son was born and bestowed with his own name as his middle name. Ryan Thakoor Deen was followed by the birth of another daughter in February of 1981, Thalia. In addition to being a loyal husband and loving father to his children, Dr. Deen remained diligent and successfully started his own practice that consisted of two offices in the city of Orlando. He went on to practice medicine and share his compassion and gifts with the people of the Orlando community for over 35 years.
A constant pillar of the local healthcare community, Dr. Deen was privileged at numerous hospitals some of which have long since closed their doors. During his extensive career he treated multiple generations of entire families. Many of his patients were children when they first came to him and then went on to start families of their own whom they also brought to him for their care. He was one of the truly lucky few whose passion and hobby was his work, and his work was his passion and hobby. His was a life committed to serving and putting others first before himself. The ultimate expression of Dr. Deen's life work was seeing his three children grow up to embody the values, compassion, and generosity that he lived by. Dr. Deen passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27th, 2015, on his 81st birthday. He passed away as he had lived his life, on his own terms, at his home surrounded by his family. He was a father, a husband, a brother, a friend, a physician, and a grandfather. Dr. Deen is survived by his wife, Ellen, his two daughters, Sabena and Thalia, his son, Ryan Thakoor, his four grandchildren, Nicole, Alex, Katia, and Kameron, and his five sisters and one brother.
