Suyen Alemán Sevilla, 77, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. The eldest daughter of Guillermo Alemán and Inés Sevilla, Suyen was born in Managua, Nicaragua on December 18, 1945. She will be remembered fondly as the matriarchal pillar of her family and is survived by her greatest pride and legacy: her three children, Blanca Callejas, Suyen Ferdico, and Alex Leets, as well as her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Though she had an idyllic childhood, the political circumstances of her native Nicaragua would force her to live abroad in Costa Rica for a few years until she finally settled in her adopted home of Orlando, Florida, and became a proud U.S. citizen. Never one to be idle, Suyen worked happily for 17 years at Chico’s where her impeccable sense of style inspired many of her beloved customers.
Arguably the best cook in the family, her recipes were the main source of joy at every holiday gathering, even though she viciously guarded the secret ingredients of her creations. She was fortunate enough to accomplish many of her dreams, especially traveling around the world to such places as Thailand, Mexico, India, Spain, Panama as well as many states. Among her main interests, her love of history and literature cultivated a sharp mind that could recollect the minutest of details. She was the best storyteller, delivered punch lines like no one else, and had the best laugh.
But her most important roles were that of mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, mother-in-law, confidant, and friend. The wisdom she imparted came with no filter, directly in service to those she loved fiercely. She never missed a graduation ceremony, baptism, birthday, wedding, or any major milestone involving her family.
Above all, she was a devoted Catholic whose unwavering faith helped her through the most difficult times, and that brought her peace even as she battled the toughest of illnesses. She trusted what the Lord had in store for her and was grateful for whatever time she had on this earth.
A private service will be held Sunday, June 25th at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home, followed by a Commemorative Mass at 5pm at Holy Family Catholic Church for family and friends.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared for the Alemán family in the online guest book below.
