Do Young Chang, 89, a resident of Windermere, FL, passed away on August 3rd, 2012. He was born in 1923 in Yong Chun, Korea, to Mr. and Mrs. In Ho Chang. He emigrated to the United States in 1962 and earned a Ph.D. in political science at the University of Michigan. He was a professor at Western Michigan University until his retirement in 1993.
Prior to emigrating to the U.S., he was a three-star general and Chief of Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces. He served in the Korean Army for 17 years from its inception, as the Japanese occupation of Korea ended with WWII. He attended the Do Yo University, in Tokyo, Japan until 1944 with a dream of becoming a teacher, before being drafted into the Japanese Army that started his military career. He took pride in the evolving democracy and economic growth of South Korea, and until his last days, hoped and prayed for the unification of his beloved divided nation. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Hyung Sook Chang. He is also survived by his five children, Hyo Soo Chang of Seoul, Korea; David and his wife Eun Ju Chang of Lisle, IL; George Chang of San Francisco, CA; Helen and her husband Paul Chang of Chicago, IL, and Mark and his wife Catherine Chang of Johnson City, TN. He also is survived by nine grandchildren: Christine Chang and her husband Brian Lee, Katie Chang, Caroline Chang, Christopher Chang, Alexandra Chang, Mee Ri Chang, Eliza Chang, Peter Chang, and Daniel Chang. He had one great grandson, Jonah Elliott Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 10:00 am, at Woodlawn Memorial Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, FL. The family will receive friends following the service at the Windermere Club, Windermere, FL. A burial service will be held at Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA.
