Charlotte was the youngest of four children born to Albert and Edna Brooks of Hillside, New Jersey. Her siblings were Vinnie, Bill, and Doris, all having preceded her in death. She met, fell in love, and married a young West Point cadet, Ralph Tibbs Garver Jr., on June 4, 1952, immediately following Ralph’s graduation from the United States Military Academy. They were married sixty-three wonderful years before Ralph went on to meet his Lord and Savior in August 2015. Charlotte and Ralph had three children, Cheri, Ralph III (“Ran”), and Lynda. Their twenty-seven years of active duty Army life required many moves all over the world, and in each place Charlotte made it a priority to create a caring and welcoming home for her family to grow and flourish, all while faithfully supporting her husband’s military career.
Wherever their moves took them, Ralph and Charlotte involved themselves in the worship of their Lord and in service at their local church, and she made it her utmost priority to see that her children were raised in an atmosphere where Christian love and faith were lived out daily. One of Charlotte’s most treasured interests and talents was found in sewing. For many years, Charlotte utilized this talent in the making of multitudes of period correct costumes for the many Christian pageants presented by her church.
Charlotte is survived by her three children and their spouses – Kinder Harrington/Cheri’s husband, Jean Garver/Ralph III’s wife, and Joe Grimes/Lynda’s husband; four grandchildren – Christopher Harrington, Kindra Houston, Allen Grimes, and Hope DiDio; and five great grandchildren – Samara, Naomi, Hudson, Philana, and Macy.
We will all miss her generous and warm heart, beautiful smile, and contagious laughter. We are comforted knowing that she is rejoicing in heaven alongside Ralph, and that we will once again see her when our journey on earth is through.
