William Hudson Fields III, 75, of Goodyear, Arizona passed away October 2, 2010. Bill was born December 11, 1934 in New Orleans LA to William Hudson Fields Jr. and Mary Caroline Thagard. Bill attended the University of Illinois, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Massachusetts Institute of Technology receiving a Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering. Bill was the president of Fields Associates, a consulting company to the global cycling industry. He was also formerly the publisher of Bicycle Guide, Bicycling Magazine, and Microwaves. Bill worked with a number of aerospace companies on reconnaissance satellites, radio receivers and held patents for high speed cameras used in medical and nuclear research. Bill was an accomplished pilot and held both commercial and instrument ratings. Bicycle Retailer and Industry News awarded Bill with its “Brainy” Lifetime Achievement Award; he was a Life Member of the League of American Bicyclists, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and Sons of the American Revolution and was also listed in Who’s Who in America.
He is survived by his loving wife Jennifer Fawcett, his brother Jack Fields and sisters Betty Petrey and Caroline Fields, children William Fields, Patricia Pedersen, Mary Judge, stepson James Lacy and four grandchildren: Jessica Handy, James Pederson, William Pederson and Richard Pederson. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Fields and grandson Chris Pederson.
