Daniel James Scully, age 90 of Goodyear, AZ died June 4, 2018 in Litchfield Park, AZ. He was born August 10, 1927 in Butte, Montana to Daniel John Scully and Helen Mildred McMahon. As a young boy, Daniel learned quickly the value of work. Delivering newspapers and groceries not only provided money to buy items the family couldn’t afford, it began a life-long practice of serving. Noticing the needs of others, he would often buy candy and distribute it to children in a large family that couldn’t afford such luxuries.
Daniel’s desire to serve led him to the US Navy at the end of WWII. He was stationed in California and enjoyed the warm sunshine so much that upon discharge he stayed in California. He had a love of cars that led him to work as a lot boy, eventually becoming the manager of an autobody shop. He also worked as a member of the pit crew for legendary race car driver, Dan Gurney. He carried his love of racing into his personal life, always driving fast and teaching his children to sometimes do the same. Upon retirement he found joy in traveling in Spain, Portugal, Ireland and on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada. His greatest love and joy was always shared with his family. His example of hard work and optimism allowed him to raise his five children to be self-sufficient and caring individuals.
Daniel is survived by his daughters, Leah Hummel, Danette Crewse, Stephanie Gronemyer, Tobie Giboney; sister, Lois Scully; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Tim Scully; and his parents, Daniel J. and Mildred Scully.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, June 14, 2018 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 13720 W. Thomas Road, Avondale, AZ 85392. Burial will be at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Huntington Beach, CA. Condolences for the family may be left at www.thompsonfuneralchapel.com.
