He leaves his wife of 17 years, Gwenalee (Lewis) Main; son Jon (Jaci) Main, Brainerd, Minn.; daughter Mary Main, Roberts, Wis.; son Jeff (Debbie) Main, Stillwater, Minn.; stepdaughter Sandy Wold and her companion Pat Moore, Goodyear, Ariz.; sister Bonnie Nadeau; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends, as well as his special pal ‘Angel.’ He was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia in 1988, and his wife Thelma, in 1991.
Allen was born and raised in Farnhamville, Iowa. The son of Willard and Minnie (Coon) Main, he was one of seven children. He graduated from Farnhamville High School in 1938 and enlisted in the Navy in 1939.
Allen was assigned to the West Coast Fleet and was subsequently stationed at Pearl Harbor. He served in many locations and on many assignments during the war and had a great memory and passion for his experiences. While on leave, he married Thelma (Hartig) Main. After discharge from the Navy as a Lieutenant JG in January 1946, he started college at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Upon graduation from Drake, he moved to Minnesota, selling insurance for a short time and then beginning his career in Social Services. His first assignment was as a case worker in Cass County and then in director roles at three different agencies: Roseau County (1961-66), Cass County (1966-69) and Washington County (1969-1981). He retired from Washington County Social Services at the age of 62.
Allen moved to the West Coast after marrying Gwen (Lewis) Main in 1994, and eventually moved to Texas. He most recently lived in Phoenix.
Allen was an avid golfer, an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed many other outdoor activities during his life. He will be sadly missed.
There will be a private burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn., at a later date. Memorials preferred to the charity of your choice.
