Mildred was born and raised in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Upon graduation from Tuscaloosa County High School, she went on to earn her RN degree at Druid City Hospital’s School of Nursing, subsequently achieving her Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Alabama where she began teaching. Moving with the School of Nursing in 1967 to Birmingham, Mildred enjoyed a successful teaching career, retiring from UAB.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Trimm, Ruby Pearl (Channell), and stepmother Mattie Lou (Capps) Hamner and her sister, Vera Ann (Hamner) Akins and her brother, William Franklin Hamner
She is survived by her adopted nephew, Edward Brack Mitchell, Sr. (Candice L. McClure), two “grandsons”, Eddie, Jr. (Nicole) and Brian James (Jessie) and seven “great grandchildren.”
She was a respected member of the UAB community, a “rabid” UAB Blazer fan, and a long-time faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 10:00 until 12:00. A celebration of life will begin at 12:00 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1150 S. Dickerson Pike, Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
Burial will be Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Northport, Alabama.
