Johnny spent most of his life in and around Sumner County in TN. He was married for over 35 years and had one daughter and lived in a small place called New Deal near Portland, TN. It was here that he started fulfilling his dream of building a home and raising and supporting his family. He was a great family man who spent every day for the rest of his life working hard and never letting anything stop him from achieving his goals.
He retired from DuPont and then went on to do the work he had longed for most in the outdoors; farming. He never seemed to tire and he thrived on hard work. He was a positive thinker, inventive, brutally honest at times, opinionated, confident, strong of body and will, a good husband, and most of all the best role model a daughter could ask for. Most importantly in 1966 he found the Lord and was baptized in the Red River. His faith remained strong throughout his life and for many years he was a deacon in the church and a song leader.
He had many "irons in the fire" and always believed a person could do anything if they just worked hard and didn't ever stop. He came from humble beginnings and always believed in cutting people some slack when they were down on their luck.
In 1994 he was given the most precious gift of all, a beautiful granddaughter, his namesake, Morgan Nicole Baxter. After 10 years together he remarried. They had devotion, love and companionship together. They took care of each other with great strength and patience. She saved his life with only minutes to spare after a near fatal farming accident in 2007 for which he was grateful for throughout the rest of his days. They took care of each other and kept each other going. Johnny was a warrior and a man of God, and the hardest working man that's ever been.
Friday, May 22, 2015 he was taken suddenly from this earth too soon but God decided his work on earth was done. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jay and Virgil and his sisters Shirley and Louise.
Johnny is survived by his present wife Peggy Clinard Murphy, his only child Shelia Morgan Baxter and his loving son-in-law Michael, his only grandchild a granddaughter Morgan Nicole, his brother Billy (Eloise) Morgan, his sisters Gail Callis (John) and Betty Keene and his former wife and mother of his only child Doris June Hunter.
