He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mattie (Hix); one son, David Hunter (Chere’ Byrum) of Gainesboro, Tennessee and one daughter, Linda Gregory (David) of Hendersonville, Tennessee. Howard is also survived by seven grandchildren; Melissa Baker (Brad), Nat Byrum (Hannah), Ryan Hunter (Lorraine), Becky Chastain (Kelly), Bethany Vines (Zac), Ben Byrum (Adri), Sarah Tarpley (Trey) and nine great-grandchildren.
Born to the late Joseph Lindsay Hunter and Ruby Beck Hunter, Howard is also preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Denise Hunter.
A native of Madison, Tennessee, Howard attended Stratton Elementary School and graduated from Litton High School in 1947. He received degrees from Lipscomb and Duke Universities. Howard was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army. He worked as a physical therapist for the Veterans Administration hospital in Nashville and was a founding Elder of the Northside Church of Christ in Nashville.
Howard was a kind and humble man. He was an outstanding student of the Bible and taught many classes during his lifetime. He enjoyed both reading and writing. During the time of the Covid lockdown and at the age of 90, Howard authored 4 small Christian books which examined the meaning and purpose of life.
A Funeral Chapel service will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, May 30, 2023 with a graveside service to follow, all at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 1150 S. Dickerson Pike Rd., Goodlettsville, TN. Services officiated by Les Chapman and Jonathan Jones.
Honored to serve as Pallbearers will be Ryan Hunter, Zac Vines, Brad Baker, Trey Tarpley, Colton Young, Eddie Shelby, Johnny Shelby and Steve Gregory. Honorary Pallbearers include James Seigenthaler, James Kelley, Geoffery Sikes, and David Roach.
