Harry was born in Detroit, Michigan Sunday, April 24, 1927; he proudly served his country in WWII and was honorably discharged from the US Navy on May 17, 1946. Because of serving his country, he was unable to graduate high school, but one of the highlights of his life was when the State of Tennessee Department of Education awarded him a WWII Veteran Honorary Diploma from Cumberland High School. He also had the privilege of participating in the Honor Flight in Washington, D.C.
He married the love of his life, the late Marie Irwin on December 21, 1946. Together they had two children, Brenda and Larry. He worked for many years at Neuhoff Packing and went on to start his own business, H & I Home Improvements.
Harry always enjoyed being outside; he especially loved fishing and working in his yard. He was known for the abundant roses, iris and tulips that he grew. He was also known for decorating his yard at Christmas, as he enjoyed people driving past and admiring the decorations, especially the tall evergreen he decorated in memory of his wife.
Harry was an adoring father, grandfather and great-grandfather; his spirited nature will be greatly missed by his children, Brenda (Bob) Page, Larry (Cathy) Irwin; grandchildren, Kimberly (Jack) Bryant, Dana (Jimmy) Craighead, Tara (Frank ) Frazier and Andrea (Derrick) Dennis; great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Alex, Jackson, Parker, Olivia, Caroline, Weston and Levi.
The family would like to say a special thanks to his caregivers and neighbors for their wonderful care.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted 3:00 Friday, October 30, 2015 at graveside in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends will gather to remember Mr. Irwin at a visitation Friday, October 30, 2015 from 1 until 3 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
